Five-Star Artists

Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art will hold an exhibition series entitled “Quintet,” featuring a selection of five artists who showcase works at museum exhibits and other events in and outside of Japan. This exhibition will introduce works produced by five female artists who have accumulated years of study, have displayed works continuously, and create works with “landscape” as the theme using a variety of methods. The artists are: Yasue Kodama; Yuko Kawada; Mio Kaneda; Miki Morikawa; and Takako Azami.

Landscapes are a familiar theme for Japanese people. These artists capture landscapes on the canvas through their own unique ways of expression, comprehending in their respective ways the sceneries and atmospheres they come into contact with in their daily life. Rather than realistically interpreting the landscapes, these artists represent seasons, time, weather, as well as the air, image, and memory of the era by accentuating and abstracting the traits of the objects portrayed.

The recent and latest works of the artists arouse the imagination of the viewer, and offer unlimited “visual enjoyment.” The five instrumentalists are five-star artists who will forever be etched in the history of contemporary art because of their respective achievements and, at this exhibition, will perform a quintet with splendid and dazzling tone.
