Reflections of Holland: The Hague School and Barbizon

In late 19th century Netherlands, there was a group of painters whom Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh called “Mastodon .” These artists were members of the “Hague School” named after the city where the artists were based. This exhibition is the first exhibition in Japan focusing on the Hague School. Inspired by the French Barbizon School, the artists of the Hague School looked back to Dutch paintings in the Golden Age of the 17th century. They depicted landscapes unique to the Netherlands that drew on their observations of outdoor nature; notably windmills, canals, seascapes, and ships. They also painted fishermen and farmers and familiar everyday scenes, including indoor spaces, in transparent and delicate lighting. This exhibition features works from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands. The works on display include not only works of the Hague School, but works of the Barbizon School from collections in Japan and of the Kroller Muller Museum, as well as the early works of Van Gogh and abstract painter Piet Mondrian, who were influenced by the Hague School.
