The Exhibition from the Collection of the Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art

Seven Mazes of Paintings

A Never-Ending Quest

A maze is a highly intricate palace in which it is difficult to reach the exit. The art world, filled with a vast array of astonishing works, is similar to a maze.

In this exhibition, the museum’s works are arranged into seven themes. Each section of paintings – the products of an extraordinary amount of thinking and consideration by painters – are likened to a maze. The exhibition showcases around 70 paintings from the 19th century to the present, including the paintings of van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, and Seiji Togo from the permanent collection, as well as the works of: Hisao Domoto, an active writer of the Art Informel group; Sadamasa Motonaga, a member of the internationally renowned vanguard group “Gutai”; and Kozo Mio, a painter known for his covers of the Japanese magazine “Focus.” Only at an exhibition like this one, showing the museum’s own collection, can visitors leisurely view contemporary paintings, each of which has its own unique interpretation of the world. Enter into and enjoy this non-everyday realm.
