150ème Anniversaire de la naissance de Suzanne Valadon

This is an exhibition of works by Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), a painter of Paris landscapes filled with poetic atmosphere, and his mother, painter Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938). Featuring oil paintings, this exhibition showcases around 40 works by Utrillo and around 40 works by Valadon, including works on display in Japan for the first time and works from private collections. Utrillo’s works, which have acquired great fame in Japan, are introduced, interlaced with the painter’s relationship with his mother that lies at the root of his works.

Chronology of Utrillo and Valadon

1865 Valadon is born. In 1869, she moves to Paris with her mother.
1880-82 Valadon becomes a circus acrobat but quits, becomes a model for painters.
1883 Utrillo is born. Valadon starts painting around this time.
1896 Valadon marries to banker Paul Moussis.
1904 Utrillo starts painting to treat his alcohol addiction.
1914 Valadon remarries to André Utter, 21 years her junior and a friend of Utrillo.
1935 Utrillo marries Lucie Pauwels.
1938 Valadon dies.
1955 Utrillo dies.
